Looking for information on a mid-September solo trip to northern Wisconsin and the NHALSF. I am looking for comments on these lakes: Pallette, Escanaba, Nebish and Lost Canoe. I will be camping at the lakes that have camping options.
I am also interested in these lakes:
Big Muskellunge, Crystal, Allequash, Star, Lone Tree and Nixon.
I have been to Bittersweet lakes, Buffalo & Cunard campgrounds and want to go a bit north of these areas.
I have done some research so I have a little background on this area, but looking for first hand input for fishing & camping.
Thanks!

Since you mentioned already doing research, you are probably aware of the special fishing regs. Some of the lakes are experimental and require checking in with the DNR at Escabana Lake for a special permit. I think you may also have to report your catch results the same day.

Cycle,
I read your day trip report and it is encouraging regarding the campsite on Lost Canoe being nice. I did see on Google earth that there are homes on the west end of the lake.
Regarding the fishing regs, I read up some and am planning on hitting Escanaba to make sure I get the proper paperwork or procedures. Pallette lake is 60' deep, so I will definitely drop a line there.
Solitude is what had drawn me to these lakes, as you mentioned not seeing many people.
Thanks for the info, and if you can think of anything else about the area, please let me know.

Crystal is just that... crystal clear. Popular beach on the lake, but in September, that's not in play. Musky is right "next door". Big campgrounds next to both lakes.
If you're looking for more of a canoe "route", I would suggest the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest Canoe Route. Lots of smaller lakes, many with campsites on them instead of large campgrounds.

Jackfish,
I read about Crystal Lake, didn't fit my bill, but I am heading to the NHALSF at noon today with stops at Starrett, Lost Canoe, Pallette and Escanaba for starters. I will kick around for a week or so on a solo trip.

Agreed on Crystal. If you were going there with family in summer, I'd say go for it, but the lakes you're going to are great canoeing lakes. Most, if not all, have state forest campsites. Have a great time. Tell us about it when you get back.
