Last Friday a birder discovered and identified a female King Eider on the Ohio River, on the Ohio side. It’s been here for a week. It is an Arctic dwelling bird that winters in salt water along the coast of Alaska and Northeastern Canada down to the DC area. Only 3 have been identified in Ohio as far south as this one. My wife and I went to see her this past Monday.

That’s pretty neat! I don’t know if you frequent the Ohio game fishing website, but the other day a guy posted a couple of photos he took that day of a snowy owl on the Great Miami river near the Stewart st. Bridge in downtown Dayton! I’ve been keeping my eyes open, but no luck.....thanks for sharing the photo....very cool.

Snowy owls have been abundant this year. More than I've been aware of in my life.

We went to Dayton trying to see the owl, try was the order of the day. But, this past Monday we saw one in Sharonville, a suburb of Cincinnati, about 10 minutes from my house. It was sitting on an office building, it flew shortly after we saw it and landed on top of Costco. It also hung around a Dave and Busters that was close. It hasn’t been reported in a week. We saw the Eider and Owl a week apart. Two rare birds for our area in a week = pretty good birding.
