I was able to pull off a short solo this past weekend. It was short, but great! For a while it was looking like I may not fit one in this year so I'll take a 3 day trip over nothing. I entered Sat. May 19 and returned home on Mon. May 21. Left home at 3 am to drive to the Tofte Ranger Station and made my final decision while driving up there. It was fun walking in without a permit reserved:) I entered at Homer and camped on Pipe and Vern. I used my new to me SR Q 16 that I purchased from Atb over the winter. Not as fun paddling as a true solo but it still worked well. Best part of the trip was that I saw zero people. Hope to get some pictures posted if I can ever get more that 10 minutes to sit at the computer.

Those short trips can be the best. Especially if you are just winging it, as you did. Vern is a great little lake. Saw my first Boreal Chickadee in the BWCA on that lake.

Walking into the ranger station and asking "what's available" - love that. I did that once, and have to do it more. Glad you got away for a short trip. Any and all time up there is good.
Now that you've got that SR16, remember you can pop one of the seats out easily for when you are paddling solo. More room for gear forward or the dog, and seat can go back in when a duckling comes along. Just have to adjust things a little for portaging as the weight center then is off a bit.

It was fun just walking in there like that :)
I took out the stern seat and turned it around paddling from the bow seat. The space worked out well for Echo. I think he enjoyed the extra space compared to the Northwind Solo that I had rented the other solo trips. I was able to get the spare paddle and fishing poles strapped in just right to help with the portaging balance.
Not only do we have dogs that look alike, but now so do our canoes..... but you have the fast red and I have the slow green.
