My wife and I are going in the first week of September and would love to catch a lake trout. Any advice on best lakes and or tactics in that area that time of year? Would love to check that one off my list!

To my knowledge, Winchell is the only lake in that area that has Trout. I have had some success on Winchell, but be advised, Winchell is not a lake for the faint of heart. I have been stranded on Winchell twice, and have paddled it's entire length (west to east) with a head wind. Waves on Winchell can be brutal as the entire south side of the lake is a roughly +150' cliff. Wind easily rifles through the lake due to its funneling characteristics.

On a lighter note, trout fishing can be great. Winchell is known for its massive Pike and Trout. For Trout, my success has been with a 1/2oz orange jig with a orange twister tail grub body. Fish around 30' deep and roughly 60' from shore. Winchell is a fairly deep lake, but if you let the wind drift you as your trolling, you should be able to find a couple decent sized Trout.
