Has anyone ever had any issues with the soles on their Steger mukluks just crumbling off the mukluk? I absolutely love these boots but pretty disappointed in the soles and Steger customer service.

I have never owned a pair of Steger mukluks but, I have heard they have a life of their own.

As a school teacher I should practice what I preach day in and day out, damn autocorrect.

I heard storing rubber products by electrical motors can cause damage. Waders for instance. Not sure of the reason but there are some articles about it out there.

The only thing I have heard was that petroleum products can be tough on them. Gasoline, diesel fuel, etc...

If you step in oil or gasoline soaked snow (diesel is the worst) while filling your car the solvents can do damage. Exposure to fresh gasoline might cause them to crumble.

This is partially true. Electric motors that operate with brushes can produce sparks that, in turn, produce ozone. Ozone does degrade rubber products.

There are brushless DC motors and AC synchronous motors that produce no ozone, and it would be safe to store rubber products near these motors.

My first pair of Steger Mukluks lasted about 15 years of pretty hard use. I eventually blew out my big toe where the sole meets the hide. I fixed it and it lasted a few more years.

The rubber sole started getting soft and small pebbles would stick to it and it became bothersome. I did not have any issues with crumbling.

I'm guessing, but not certain that the sole material is a two part product and if improper ratios are used, one or the other could happen.

In the end, my Mukluks were amazing and had a real good life. I essentially just wore them out and bought a new pair last year. In 15 years I'll buy another pair.

perhaps road or sidewalk salts accumulated over several seasons and not washed out of the leather. ??

In all honesty it would be nice if Steger would just resole them for me. I would think that would be an easy fix. The uppers are in perfect shape.

Need to know more information. How old are your boots? and did you ever stand where gasoline or oil has been spilled? Most service stations occasionally have small spills that are enough to cause the slow degradation I believe you are describing.

I have been told by many folks that to put the used boots into the expensive liquid that is the soles will destroy the rest of the liquid.

Remove the crumbly stuff and spread on E6000 that you can pick up at home depot etc. With that stuff you can stand in Gasoline and it will not effect the E6000

I have never had Steger mukluks. I wear these instead Truth North Boots

I have had them for 12 + years with no issues even though I wear them all around in the gunky, oily parking lots in the Cities. And they are designed for any parts that wear out to be replaced. They are made up in Duluth and are my favorite boots ever.
