I have a question about reserving permits. I will be the group leader for an overnight paddle and I am fairly sure our group size will be 6. My question is, do I need to pay for all 6 right when I reserve my permit? Or can I add members after my permit has been reserved and pay for the additions after? Can I just start with me and 1 alternate when I make the reservation? Thanks all.

The one thing that needs to be done at the time the permit is reserved is that the leader and any alternate leaders who might pick up the permit are identified. The permit can only be picked up by those people and whoever picks it up must go on the trip.

Sorry if this has been asked & answered. For a solo tripper, or a parent/child combo -- I understand I need to list an alternate and pay for two adults when reserving my permit. Do I get the fee for the 2nd adult refunded when I show up to claim my permit and confirm that I am going solo?

At least in the past, you do not need to list an alternate leader unless you have someone else that you want to pick up the permit. You do need to pay for two adults when reserving the permit. If going solo, you do get the money back when you pick up the permit. Or if going with more people than you paid for up front then you pay the additional fees when picking up the permit.

A good reason for having an alternate is: If you are the leader and end up not being able to go, would other members in your group go anyway? If they might, then at least one alternate leader that would want to go anyway is good to list. If you don't have one listed, only you can sign & pick up the permit.

Andy,
Just so you know - 2 things;
You no longer have to list the email address for the alternate leader(s)
If you enter 1, 2 or 3 alternate leaders, you will pay for that many plus the leader, when you reserve the permit. The default of 2 people is no longer valid because you have listed all the alternates.
If you would end up paying for that many anyway, I think no big deal. But just so you don't get freaked out when the fee for the reservation comes up with $64.00 plus the $6.00 fee = $70.00.

Still pretty good insurance. As long as the group size and resulting fee can still be adjusted up or down to the correct number when obtaining the actual permit, right?

I will be putting in for my permit later this year as we are not certain of the date yet. Is there anywhere I can check to see what has been reserved on certain EP's for any given day with the new system or is there a different site that would allow that?

VoyageurNorth: "Yup, the actual fee you pay at the time of issuance can always to adjusted to fit exactly how many adults/youth you have. So you pay more or pay less. :-)"
Also for the Senior Pass, right? Or is that at res time?

I assume once the new system is up and running and permits start to get reserved you'll be able to check availability. The old system you could pick your EP and date range it would tell you how many permits were available for each day in the range you selected.
