Looking at getting a new 4-person tent for tripping with three people, or two people and a dog. Specs I would like are: light weight (under 7 lbs), roomy, and bullet proof from rain and wind.

I'm leaning towards a Big Agnes Copper Spur, Manzanares (cheaper than Copper spur, but a bit heavier), MSR Papa Hubba, or a CCS Lean. Any input or other suggestions appreciated.

I have many questions for Lean users as to ease of set up in BW and weather and bugproofness.

I only have first hand experience with the BA Copper Spur HV4 from your list. It is a great tent and well worth the cost. Invest in a tent footprint or make your own from Tyvek or something similar.

I don't have the MSR Papa Hubba, but I do have the 4-man MSR Elixir and 2-man Hubba Hubba - both have been excellent. I don't have experience with the other brands, except have heard nothing but great things about Big Agnes. I do have CCS tarp and pack, but no experience with shelters. I prefer tents over lean-to style.

MSR just came out with a upgrade to the "Hubba" series for 2019. The previous versions have been on great sales lately - up to 40% at REI and other places. Something to keep an eye out for.

I used mine for about 10 years of BWCA and Quetico tripping. Also car based camping around WI/MN, including some winter camps. I have written many posts and reviews on it, easily searched. Other owners have also regularly commented.

I picked up a REI half dome 4 (plus) a couple years back, nice rig so far but it comes in @ 7lbs, 10 ounces.

Butthead, you said you "used" yours as in past tense. Did you stop using it and if so why? I just got done reading all the threads I could find on the Lean and it answered many of my questions. Will a lean 2 fit 3 people easily?

Oldtown, I did see the sale on the Hubba's recently.

I bought it from him last year. I have used it a few times and I really like it. Proper set-up makes bug issues very minor. A very nice 3 lb shelter that is a combo of a tent and a tarp.

It's sale to a member "SinglePortage" along with a small pile of other gear I sold went to a very good friend's "Go Fund Me" project. I am shifting to more backpacking and trimming down (need to work on myself mostly now), but will replace it in the future.
I used a Lean 1+ and it comfortably fit 2 with gear and a dog. While it lists at 5 feet across the ridge the bottom splays out significantly, depending on setup style a front width over 7 feet across the door bottom. The 2+ with a 7 foot ridge should comfortably fit 3. You could have a square dance in the 3+.

I have been looking at all the retail and discount web sites for a while now. What I'm really looking for is peoples inputs into what they like and why for those who have tents within parameters I mentioned.

I love The BA Copper Spur for it's light weight, ease of set up, steep walls, and effectiveness against bugs and rain. If I had to do it over again I would replace my Hilleberg Nammatj 2 with the Copper spur 2.

I have a 16 year old Halfdome 4 and will be adding a Lean+ 2 before my trip this June. The rei tent will be used by half my group and I (and one other adventurous one) will be using the Lean as our primary shelter. I’ve got my fingers crossed that it’s all it’s been said to be.

Love my Copper Spur 3 for two of us. Canoe and backpacking.

Tripped last year with an MSR Elixir 4 tent last year, first year with it.

Set up was very, very easy. Decent headroom, and lots of room for 3 people, or 2 and a dog. Not real expensive, might want to check it out.

kelty gunnison 4,
solid, good price
but about 7 lb 10 oz if i recall, but the extra material instead of all mesh, may add a little warmth on colder nights too

Copper spur 4 HV. It was tight but we got my whole family of 4 in just fine and very light weight.

thanks everyone. I went with a Big Agnes Manzanares 4 person HV Mtnglo. Its the exact same tent design as the Copper spur but 1.5 lbs heavier as they use some heavier material. This tent is 1.5lbs lighter than my current 3 person tent, so I'm adding tent space and still saving a bit of weight. If I pull the LED strip out for BW I might save a few oz's. But got the tent for $375 instead of $650(Copper Spur) and the footprint was $60 instead of $90. With the Money I saved by not buying the Copper Spur I'm getting the BA Sentinel Double 30' sleeping bag on sale for $240 for my wife and I.
