I had my first-ever "broken stove" incident on a recent trip. I've had a MSR Whisperlite Universal for a number of years, six or seven, and it has been a fantastic little stove. Never had a problem...until I discovered the threads were stripped on the canister connector hose when I attempted to screw on a new canister one morning. Luckily, my brother had a MSR Pocket Rocket along and we used that for the remainder of the trip.
Upon returning home, I called MSR to inquire about ordering a replacement part. I figured if it was not too expensive I would fix it myself. The guy I talked to listened to my situation, took down my information, and informed me that he would be shipping a part out to me as soon as possible. I asked about price, and he pleasantly informed me that there would be no charge. He proceeded to apologize to me for my stove failing while on a wilderness trip. Awesome service!
Lesson: Always test your canisters, even the new ones, before leaving civilization. Make sure they work. Also, have your brother bring his 4 ounce Pocket Rocket along. Just in case!

I too have had excellent service from MSR. When I first got my Whisperlite Universal, it occurred to me that when changing the fuel types you could easily lose or damage the little plunger/shaker thing that cleans the jets. I called MSR and the person I talked to agreed and he sent me a couple of extras at no charge. I've not had any problems with the stove and depending on the temperature I've used it in both liquid and canister mode.

I always take my Pocket Rocket 2 just in case. Of course if the fuel canister is bad, it won't do much good. Test before you go. I recall an old thread discussing an issue with threads. If I recall someone actually had a canister that was missing the threads. You could always throw in a Titanium Emberlit as back up for the backup if you don't mind soot on your pots/pans. In an emergency it shouldn't matter.

I had the exact same experience on an older Wind Pro2 after my wife cross threaded a canister(be careful about that!). This was after I explained that it was our fault. They are a great company. We, too, take a Pocket Rocket.
So many fish,so little time
