I thought there would be a lot of hunters on this sight. Guess not.

Wondering if anybody has ever bear hunted on upper pauness? Last year was my first year bear hunting in the bwcaw. hunted in between shell lake and lower pauness. Group of 5 and nobody had any luck last year, too many berries and acorns. The group I was with has hunted bear in the boundary waters for the last 20 + years. It has been a while since any of them have hunted off of upper pauness and we are planning hunting there this fall. Curious for any input or info about bear hunting on upper pauness.

I think it would be fun to try grouse hunting and fishing on the same trip in the BWCA.

I've done that in the fall and had an absolute blast. Both the fishing and the hunting were spectacular. Made for some great meals!

not BWCA hunt but close..a buddy from California called last min and said he was coming for deer season and I should find a place for us to hunt. So I scrambled and found a bunch of public near my cabin. In years past I have seen vehicles in the area so I didnt know what to expect come season. It is a half mile portage and then paddle across the lake to a nice maple/birch ridge. I got a couple stands in there and set up a camp on the ridge side of the lake 2 days before opener. We closed the bar down Friday night and didnt reach camp till around 3am. A few hours after that I put him in my climber stand on top of the ridge overlooking an old clear cut and gave him my bleat call. By 8 that morning he had a buck on the ground..just a spike but his first deer in over 20 years. We were pretty stoked!
This year he is coming to do some bow hunting before rifle season and then stay for first week of rifle. I can't wait.

I've grouse hunted the pow wow trail and part of the kek, it has been a few years before the fire. I went back once about 2 seasons after the fire. Need to get back again.

I'd think deer hunting the BWCA would be large challenge. Though I have seen a deer or two over the years. Closer to put in areas at that.

1 more hunter checking in. I always carry a 20 gauge along when grouse season is open when we're in the BW. A buddy and I were also lucky enough to draw a moose permit the last year the season was open. We did not shoot a moose but saw a bunch of cows and calves. Having never moose hunted the learning curve was steep but if ever given the chance to hunt moose in the BW again I would be very confident we would be portaging one out.

I use to bear hunt every year up by Crosby, MN. Haven't done it in a few years due to family obligations. It is time consuming to keep your bait site always stacked if a bear is hitting it.
Try a honey burn with a coffee can, charcoal, soup can filled with honey suspended over the coals with old wire hangers drilled through the sides of the coffee can. Big plume of white smoke burning the honey. Had bears always come into that setup.
