I have some friends who are making their first trip to Kahshahpiwi soon and they wanted advice about the various routes in and out. I was wondering if anyone has recently taken the southern route (from Side Lake) and, if so, what the condition of the beaver pond is at the south end of the last long portage into 'Piwi. In recent years it has usually been floatable to the beginning of the old established portage (on the west side of the pond) but I think at times it has gone back to being too dry so that you are required to portage the whole way along the east side of the pond, which is not that great. Anyone know the current conditions? Thanks in advance for the info.
No information on current conditions, but last year (while the pond was still passable) the portage crew walled off the pond passage portage with debris and had not maintained the section between bog portage junction and the pond. At the ranger station this year Jason suggested that the southern route was less favorable than the YumYum.
