Kicking around the idea of going there in the spring to see the pictos. Now, my understanding is that as long as you stay in the canoe, and don't have any fishing gear, you can view the pictos without any permits or other paperwork. Is this correct ? I can't go into Canada, due to a misspent youth, but I and my grandson would like to see the pictos.

I think that you'll be OK viewing the pictographs from your canoe. As you wrote, don't get out of the canoe (difficult to do at that spot!).

You could have fishing gear, just don't have the poles rigged with lures. You should also not have live bait in the boat.

For clarity, Warrior Hill is not where the pictos are located. Both locations are in Quetico Park.

I am sure you will be fine. However, you should not be straying over the invisible border line running down the lake. A few posters have mentioned having problems with the Canadians Customs when they were over the line. Memory says one of these instances was in fact at Warrior Hill. Technically, you are in violation anytime you cross the line, except to portage. Warrior Hill and the Pictos would clearly put you over the line. Not saying not to go, but just wanted you to be aware that technically you should have a permit, check back in to the US when you return, etc. In the past most folks doing what you plan to do have done none of the above but times are a changing.........

Lac La Croix is a border lake and as such, falls under the Webster-Ashburton treaty, meaning that persons from either nation can paddle waters on either side of the boundary and use portages on either side of the border without needing to satisfy entry requirements. What one is not allowed to do is land in the other country without proper paperwork. There’s a nice campsite on an island in Minnesota that has a nice view of Warrior Hill. The real attraction of Warrior Hill is landing there and climbing the hill for the great view, something not permitted without meeting entry requirements.

The pictos are a different story. The only way to see them is from the water, which is perfectly legal.

Looked up the history of that treaty. Very interesting!

Especially if approaching from the south, you see the very dramatic rise of Warrior Hill, peaking at around N48 16.310 W91 59.894.

The most dramatic panels of the LLC pictographs are spread along an area around N48 17.051 W92 00.374, roughly 0.93 miles NNW of Warrior Hill.
