Work may not let me escape for one last ~4 day paddle in WCPP... But i still have some hope. It would definitely be somewhere between Oct 1 and Oct 20.

So... How late is too late up there? Anyone trip in WCPP in October?

I just got back from a 9 day trip. Water levels were low, the fishing was not that great (most likely user error), and the weather was wonky. High winds and 40 degree temperature fluctuations over the course of the trip, coupled with the reduced hours of daylight, would lead to me avoid going this late in the season again. That said, the colors were spectacular as the birch and maples were changing and it seemed I had the park to myself.

We used to do a trip every year the first week of October. One year we suffered heatstroke most days. The norm was highs in the 40sF and about freezing in the morning. October winds were often times pretty rough. When a low weather system moves in, it tends to hang over you for days. Only twelve hours of daylight had us bringing a lantern so we could play until dark and then cook. What leaves there are amongst the Jack Pines up there may be on the ground.

On the plus side, the Tamarack trees in the bogs will be at their golden best. Trout season closes September 30.

We learned to take enough tarps to make our own wall tent if needed. When its noon, 34degrees, raining with a good wind - its needed. Staying dry becomes very important.

With that said, being there in the Caribou and Moose mating times can add some real thrills. Northern lights seemed to be seen more. Should not have any problem getting the five star camp sites. LOL

Pack the proper gear and have a schedule that will not force travel in the bad stuff. Been there, done that.
