Tony, I can speak about Big Bills but will on wool pants. For the sizing and cost issues I only look for used mil-surplus or Ebay used wool pants. I have picked up 2 pair of Swedish military heavy wool and a pair of Johnson wool pants all 3 for less than $100. At that type of price I do not mind hacking and sewing them to fit! Most other outer garments and mid layer shirts are fine purchased new, just not pants in my opinion.
Trimmed to fit my short wide frame, 21 oz (?) heavy wool mil-surplus winter pants.

I have all three weights of Big Bill wool pants and the merino wool ones are my favorites. All three are the same size, but the heaviest ones (the lovely green and red windowpane ones) don’t fit as well being a bit more snug when I kneel. I like wearing both the 24 oz forest green ones and the merino ones, but the merino is my go to. They just feel a bit better and I like the lighter green more. I only got the merino ones at the beginning of last winter so can’t comment on durability yet, but like them enough I’d stick with them even if I had to replace every 3-4 years.

That sounds like a very good price.
I purchased, maybe ten years ago, a pair of wool pants from Bemidji Woolen Mills. Wore them on a trip and really liked them. Unfortunately, I did not look at the instructions and washed them. Hence, I could not wear them again unless I time traveled back to 7th grade or otherwise went through some magic shrinking machine.
