Perhaps it's too soon to really tell yet, but does anyone else feel like we're going to have either an early or warm spring? Our trip is set for May 26, and I'm hoping for some warmer weather. Based on what I've seen here in Indiana, this winter has been very mild.

It would seem so, but it I wouldn’t get too optimistic as it can snow on May 26.

I would plan for anything from the 20 to 75 degrees. Also plan for snow, rain, wind, and sunny skies. If you are gone a week, you will certainly get some if not all of those. My prediction is for sunny and mild for 5 of the days in your first week there. If longer or shorter times are for you, adjust accordingly.

I hate to do it to you but I'm also heading out 5/26. I can almost guarantee high wind and rain, good chance of snow, possible blizzard . I'm not sure why mother nature hates me so much but she sure likes to rain on my parade. There will be one day of my 5-6 day trip that the sun will shine so I can get a nice sun burn on my ears and a few black fly bites. I wish I was joking.

I’m going then in May too. Could you move your trip to August? I don’t need a blizzard! LOL

I would plan on the most days being mostly warm. I would also anticipate rain mixed with snow and cold nights.

“Let’s check in with Roosevelt T. Roosevelt and see what the weather’s like down there...Roosevelt?”

“You got a window, open it!”

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Northern MN is still locked in with winter. I have knee deep snow in the woods on my property. We are still getting nights into the teens and single digits. It is too early to tell what May will be like.

However, we had an early freeze-up last November and lots of snow later in the month and in December. The ice never had a chance to get thick. It was a bad year for lake ice.
Therefore, even though we have a lot of snow on the ground, we don’t have a lot of good, solid, thick ice. You need to be observant to continued warm weather into April. With the intense sun, and potential warm weather, the ice will go early, even if there is snow in the woods.

Do not make any predictions about ice-out in March. I can tell you the weather in the border country is way different than what you are enjoying in Indiana.

I am entering May 14th for 10 days and my prediction is calm winds, sunny skies, 65 degrees every day with the Northern lights shining brightly every night along with the fish ready to jump into the canoe.

We are going in a couple days after you. In bringing my brother on his first BW trip and I’m hoping your predictions are all correct! Went in on the same week this past year and it was cold, windy and the fishing was terrible.
