Not speaking for AmarilloJim, but in my experience: it’s not like walleyes where they can get finicky and dial in on a certain color and then want a totally different color later that same day. We’ve all heard “match the hatch” and I think with lake trout it really rings true. Figure out what the trout are most likely feeding on in the lake you are fishing and try to give them something that resembles that color and profile. That’s how I approach trolling crankbaits for them. When it comes to spoons they seem willing to chase anything flashy depending on sunlight and water stain.

I find that lure color can at times significantly influence Lake Trout hook up success.
On sunny days I have found “gold” coloured spoons work best. On cloudy, overcast days silver or a silver/blue spoons are the ticket.
I experiment with lures and color when laker fishing is slow.
I was in Lac La Croix over the 4th of July several weeks ago and I could only hook up with lakers on a Firetiger coloured Rapala Deep Taildancer 30 feet deep over 60 - 90 ft of water. I have always had my best laker success on Purpledecent and Rainbow Trout colors but could only get hits on Firetiger ... go figure.
4 to 5 inch White Twister Tails on 2 oz jigs always seem to produce Lakers when a jig bite is on.

In my experience, color can matter a lot for lakers, but not *that* much...most of the time.
Stick with white, silver, and gold, and add a splash of blue or green with white or silver lures. Those three have caught 80% of my fish, and are always where I start and usually stay.
Then there are the goofy days when they don't work -- and some "oddball" like firetiger or red does the trick. Last summer on a trip to Agnes in Quetico, the fish were smoking jigging raps. The best color BY FAR was a red/black #9. That same trip we did well on brown rippin' raps. Go figure. Maybe the fish were eating crayfish?
So start with the old standbys, but don't be afraid to change it up if you're hauling lots of water without any fish. Just my .02.

Caddis: "Has anyone been catching lakers? If so what are some hot colors."
Silver and blue striker spoon. It’s been hot for me all summer. Last Friday I started fishing with 2oz weights then added another oz. and within minutes I had a trout.
