I am looking for a new light down sleeping bag. I prefer not to get a mummy bag that is tight around my feet. I like a little room to move around. I was looking at the Feathered Friends YF 30 wide or the Enlightened Equipment Convert 30 in either wide or extra wide.

I'm leaning towards the Convert, maybe in xtra wide. I was wondering if anyone out there had experience with any of these bags and could give me your opinion.

No experience with those bags. But you may want to check Sea to Summits Ember line of bags/quilts. I have had the Ember 1 for 5 years now and love it. Pushed it's limits to 28F while not in a tent, the long packs to a softball and a very generous cut that doesn't at all feel constricting. Sea to Summit Ember 1

I do not have experience with the Convert, but I do have both a 10 degree Revelation (Extra Long, Wide, 24oz) and a 40 degree Enigma (Long, Wide, 14oz).

You don't say what size you are, which matters of course...

I am 5' 11" & 175. I do move around...back and sides, and the wide is great for that. Also like to pull the quilt over my head sometimes. In hindsight the Revelation does not need to be extra long; long would have been fine for me. Additionally, I discovered that the 10 degree Revelation was too warm most of the year, which is why I have the Enigma. For me, I need the temps to be in the low 40's to use the 10 degree quilt or I am uncomfortable.

Hope that helps!

Like sns I have a 20 degree Revelation & use it in all but the hottest weather in summer. Finally used it with a hammock this summer and it was perfect. I love that it can have a foot box when I want it, open the bottom up for ventilation, or open up as a flat blanket. I combine it with a 20 degree synthetic mummy bag opened up in the winter and have slept warm in -15.

You guys certainly have given me something to think about. I haven't looked at buying a new sleeping bag in probably 20 years. On August 1, when I was driving from Ely to the put in point, it looks like I left my old down mid-weight bag on the car roof instead of putting it in my canoe pack. Didn't realize it until I was unpacking the first night. Ended up spending 9 days sleeping in every piece of clothing I had with the temps at night most often around 50 or the high 40's. Not fun, but not bad enough for me to stop and go back.

When last I bought a sleeping bag, quilts were not a thing. So I really did not pay attention to them. I am 5 foot 8 and about 200 lbs. For the past 5 years, I have mostly been using a Hennesey Hammock, and I tend to sleep on my side, turning from side to side during the night. I do most of my camping from June to mid October, and if I am car camping in cold weather, in my old age I bring my Mr. Buddy heater. ;-) Because of the responses, I am now looking at quilts and they do seem to make sense. I know that you get warmth from loft in a down bag, and the part under you is compressed. I have a down underquilt for the hammock, too bad I did not bring it on this trip.

The other thing I have picked up from your responses, is that you seem to be satisfied with Enlightened Equipment products.

Than you all for your intelligent, on point, and considered responses to date.

+1 for the Enlightened Equipment Revelation. I bought a 20-degree Revelation a couple years ago; I got a long and wide one because I typically move around quite a bit when I'm sleeping. It replaced a Northface Cat's Meow 20-degree synthetic and I couldn't be happier with it. It takes up so much less room in the pack and weighs next to nothing (comparatively) but is very comfortable. As long as I take care of it it will be with me to the end of my tripping days. I pair it with a Downmat 9 lw and it's a great sleep system. I'm considering trying an Amok Draumr hammock and my sleep system will work as well with that as it does on the ground (I think).

I got my Revelation about 7 years ago before the company really blew up in popularity. It was 2 weeks for a custom order to be fulfilled. If you're already hammocking and looking to spend, a quilt is the way to go. My quilt is my primary sleeping bag in just about all occasions including in the tent. In those instances I pair it with an Exped insulated mat for quality Zzzzs.

If you're in a hammock, you might want to consider something like the Big Agnes Lost Ranger (no longer carried; don't know if there's an equivalent in current offerings). It puts all the fill on top, and has a sleeve on the bottom to hold a pad. This means that it's easy to go to ground with a pad (I love the sleeve to hold it in place), but when you're in a hammock with an underquilt, you have all your fill weight on top of you where you want it, not compressed under you.

+1 on the Revelation. I have a 20 degree. I pair it with a Klymit V Deluxe and a custom sheet to cover the Klymit. Super compact. I have used it many times here in the Blue Ridge Mtns. We be using it in BWCA in Sept.

After fighting the entanglement of a full zip mummy bag all these years I finally dipped one foot into the alternative with the Sierra Designs Cloud 800 20 degree. I woke up every morning wanting to talk about how well I slept in it. Loved the non-zip design, hood to hold my pillow in place, toe box, and convenient slot to let your feet out. Worth checking out along with the Backcountry Bed. Only draw back I had was that sleeping on your right side was more difficult because the quilt flap attaches high on that side, which would be solved with the Backcountry Bed that is just a little heavier.

I’m 6’-1” 207lbs and the regular fits me well, but is right at the limit of needing the Large for length.

I used the EE enigma 10 degree for my PCT thru hike last year. It's a great bag at a good price, the quality is there too. I prefer the closed foot box, helps cut drafts. I would consider a revelation for a warmer bag, 30 degrees and up. I'm 6'2" 180lbs I like the long wide, I roll in my sleep and am generally a side sleeper, although they are pretty roomy so a regular width would also suit me fine. I think unless you're winter camping mummy bags are generally over kill and quilts are the way to go.

I went to hanging and converted to quilts replacing my bags. Just a thought as some tent campers seem to have made the switch also..

I have an appointment for Mudro/Fourtown on 9/5 so it was time to make a decision. Especially as the long range weather report is on the cool side. Based on your responses, I decided on a 20 degree bag and was still going back and forth between the convert and the revelation, but leaning towards the revelation. EE says that they ship in 2 days on non-custom orders. Going on line to order, I learned that they have nothing and can not commit to a delivery date. Oh well.

I have an old 0 degree square down bag which is a little heavier, bigger and bulkier, but which i will end up taking. This will be my last wilderness camping trip this year, so I will give some more thought to the revelation vs the convert and order one when I get back.

Thanks again.

Mitch, one option to save some $ and get it quicker - consider the reddit sub ULgeartrade. EE quilts show up pretty regularly there.

Just another option...

mitch, would you consider borrowing a down bag? I have a BA Horsethief 35 degree, and a Sierra Designs Back Country Bed 15 degree I could loan ya for the trip.
Honestly, back in 2014 when traveling the Rocky MT states I looked at FF and Western Mountaineering for a 3 season bag, had a price limit of $500 to spend. Looked at a bunch, came home with $500 and first found The Horsethief for under $200 which I snagged up. 3 years ago the BCBed came up on Ebay for a similar price, that's now mine also. Either is under 2 pounds with 850 fill down.

Thanks for the tip. While there was nothing there for this issue (a lot of wtb for EE stuff), its a worthwhile site to know about

BH:

Thank you for your generous offer. Upon further review, I decided to order an REI Magma Trail 30 and give it a try. If it meets my needs, great. If not, I'll return it and go back to an order over the winter for a revalation.

Mitch - Have you looked at ZPacks? I' have about 5 different bags from EE, Zpacks, Marmot, North Face (quilts and regular sleeping bags), and without a doubt, my fav is the zpacks 20-degree quilt. I've used this in the Sierras, Pennsylvania, Algonquin. It's my go-to bag for just about all my trips when temps are going below 50 at night. I'm taking it with me to the BWCA next week along with my dream hammock on 20-degree underquilt.

I have an 40° EE Revelation that I use in FL in my hammock. It is well made. I am thinking about getting a Hammock Gear Premium Burrow 20° and a Premium Incubator 20° for my hammock to use in the Smokies. You may just want to take a look at Hammock Gear.

Certainly worth looking at if I don't like the Magma. I like the idea of having a zipper to create a footbox if you want one.
