Just finishing up on prepping for my departure into BWCA and have been going over maps and was wondering if anyone fishes the lakes that are off route such as these besides Makwa Lake.

Looks like we'll have some cool weather for next week's journey. Heading into Kawishiwi in a few days!

I've not heard of anyone fishing those but that's not to say people haven't.

I do know people have gotten to Kivandeba which is sort of just off your route.

Thanks, cyclones30. Looks like my final route will start and end at Kawishiwi due to timing (when I arrive). I'm hoping to single portage most of the route. Hoping to get at least one laker on the trip :) Debating spending a few nights in the Boulder/Adams area or Little Sag. I've got all week by myself so wherever the wind takes me I'm there.

One of the best lakes I ever fished was about 200 yards long and it produced one pike over 40" and several in the mid-thirties in just a few hours of casting.

You know these lakes have to hold some fish.

Did this route in June and it might be one of my favorites. Stayed on Malberg, Makwa, Boulder, and Malberg (again). Two nights each with a third on Malberg. Great fishing on Makwa and Boulder. Quiet area. Beautiful.

Just getting the last-minute weather check. I'd say we're getting colder weather next week temps are dipping into the 30's. The truck gets packed tonight and I'm off for my 1st BWCA trip. I was hoping to stay in Duluth overnight but there's not a hotel/motel that has space anywhere. Sleeping in the truck :)

Thanks, shock. coming from Pittsburgh, I was going to head up the towards Mackinaw City route but that adds 2 hrs to the trip. I'll just go the Chicago route. BTW - I checked out your photos. Damm, you have a lot! Liked the "boneless Pike" shot. That was done perfectly.

I'll put up a trip report once I get back.

Remember you're allowed to camp legally on Forest Service land that isn't the BWCA. There are a few other restrictions you should check. We set up a camp 1/2 mile from the entry point in a small clearing where we can pull off the road. You can have a fire and sleep flat.
