I'm thinking of going in through Snowbank lake this winter. The map on bwca.com shows that there is a winter trail there. Does anyone know if that's a dog sled trail or heavily used? Last year I went in through Poplar and on the exit day we traveled far and my dog was pretty gassed from running through the deeps now by the end. I thought maybe if we had a trail, it might be easier on him.
Never been on the BWCA side in the winter but I drive out and ice fish in the winter. We see dogsleds and XC skiers pulling sleds heading in every year.
There’s a few outfitters that will haul you into various locations via dogsled for a fee. I know a guy who basically lives in a yurt on basswood and guides for lakers and dark house spearing pike. He operates with a team of dogs as well.
I just snowshoe or ski in myself, but I don’t winter camp. Day trips are good enough as I can drive home and sleep in bed...
If they call it tourist season, why doesn’t the DNR issue tags???
