Just observed a bird I have never seen before. A belted kingfisher according to my Minnesota bird book. Location is south central Minnesota. I read they are "seen perched on branches near the water, it dives headfirst for small fish and returns to a branch to eat." That would make sense with the creek out back. They are not normally in this area in the winter but reside on the southeast border, along the Mississippi River Valley. Looks like some hang out here and feed on creek chubs...
