I came across what would be a good deal (68.00) on a BWCA fish finder on Ebay. I know a lot of people ask about them. It is not mine nor anyone I know, but they haven't made the non- color portable AA battery models for awhile and I thought someone may be interested if they do not want to make up a battery box etc. which is what I did. My buddy, however, has one of these and with Energizer Lithium AA's it runs forever (8 days of hard fishing and still strong). It is important to use the EUL batteries when you have an 8 battery set-up and 10 batteries with standard Alkaline. I hate the color sonars up there as they eat batteries like crazy and are not really necessry. Piranhamax Portable

FWIW - This design is just like my PiranhaMAX 210 Portable (B&W), which I love. Folds down into the hard case and is relatively slim for packing. It can go days -- multiple trips, actually -- on a set of AAs. In recent years, Humminbird put their "portable" units into a large-ish bag and it wound up being a rather bulky package. Not sure how the 10 and 210 compare...

I *think* he means Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries, but the statement probably applies in general to lithium -vs- alkaline batteries for this unit.

I have the colored and black and white-they both are great and run a long time. Yes black and white lasts a little longer. Lithuim all the way in the BWCA.
You once could just buy the box and adapt certain locators to it.

Can you successfully shorten the transducer cable? I have a set up for my canoe, but would like to get rid of the excess cable, I'm just afraid to cut and splice. Is it easy, or will it create problems?

A myself would be scared to cut and slice also.

Something you might not consider. I suppose my cable is 15 feet or so. The transducer also has a temperature probe in it. I sometimes lower the probe with cable to its end and get a temperature gadiant in the water for fishing. It has helped sometimes.

I had never thought of doing that. I may have to do that.

I had thought of getting some small, skinny hose, and a pump, and getting colder drinking water from deeper water. I'm not a fan of drinking warm water. often there is a big difference in temperature, if you can even get down a few feet. We've all felt it when swimming. I recall one time dropping my readers to the bottom in 7 feet. I swam down to try to find them. That last foot where I was putting my hands was much colder than the rest.
