We're going to target area of Basswood from where Jackfish Bay narrows way down and the motorized area ends, to Hauson's Island.

Anyone fish this and have any advice?

Any advice on campsites/availability?. Thinking mid-August.

All input much appreciated, thanks.

I've been there twice in August...but only for about a day each.

Site 1537 on the point is not the world's nicest site, but the tiny island to the east of it did have smallies and walleyes stacked around it once the wind died down in the evening.

Otherwise, if the lake itself gets slow for you...hide your canoe in the woods on the upper falls portage and walk the trail and fish all the pools in the current and eddies and such.

Not to be dumb, but if I read the maps right, this would be the 'pools and eddies' in the Basswood river. The portage trail runs close enough to access the river?

Right. The portage trail itself isn't right along shore. But there are quite a few offshoot trails to the right (going that way) that lead you to the river or to campsites or whatnot. There are also stretches where you can basically walk the shoreline of the river for quite a ways without need for a trail.

That sounds cool. Maybe worth a morning or afternoon of exploration? Pretty good fishing action?

Yes and yes. You may go once and decide it's worth another visit if you're there a few days. A lot of space to see and water to fish. Might be a few spots worth taking the canoe part way down the trail for
