Here's a fun video of some late-ice crappie fishing in the Boundary Waters! Generally, I spend most of my time chasing Walleye and Trout in the BWCA, but I don't think I've had more fun than these two days slamming 12" Crappies (and Tullibees, bull sunfish and perch) one after another. Enjoy!

Great video.
Is that road plowed in the winter?

No. It is a winter route and gets used by foot and dog travel. Was a snowmobile route 50 years ago.

In order to get into Gabbro easily, you kind of need to hit it at the right time. I needed a snowmobile to travel the last two miles to the LG entry point from the end of Spruce Road. This year, we probably don't have much snow cover so you could probably drive it, but the ice may be sketchier now. Even if you can get to the LG entry point parking lot, it is still a 2/3 mile portage then a 3ish mile walk to the area we were fishing. It can be done in a day trip, but it's a lot of work. When I launch video 2, you will see how big of a nightmare that hike can be if you wait too long in the season and start losing shoreline...

No need to tell the name of the lake in the YouTube video. Please edit it out.

I thought long and hard about editing out the name, but ultimately decided to leave it in. I always mention lake name in my videos (other than small stocked trout ponds, which people can figure out even if I don't mention the name) and some people hate me for it, which I have to learn to live with. I do this in an effort to share knowledge and information, not intentionally to put pressure on a lake. I never mention any other details other than depth we are fishing. The crappie bite I experienced only lasted for about two weeks before the ice was unsafe for travel, so the window is very slim. It is also a 4ish mile hike one-way to get on the lake after a snowmobile ride or another 1.5 mile walk, which eliminates about 95% of people who would consider doing this kind of trip. I have never seen more than 2-3 groups out on the lake when I have gone, and don't expect this video will result in that much more fishing pressure.

I know exactly how far and where it is. You were given the info from a couple of people in Ely, they’re disappointed.

Seems the dude lives in and or has family in Ely. And the spot he fished is a known crappie spot (lake) all seasons. ( easy research done). You get in there in winter/late winter with hard work and sharing reports --- I'am more for the sharing.-- who damn cares??? IF Ely peeps really "shared" this info with a "newbie" -- then 2 min penalty on them if they think "secret lake". Gabbro area has been known for years to hold slabs in all seasons. But you still have to find them. Gunflint has big trout as does SAG/South/etc. I see no difference in getting to those holes in winter either--- give the dude a break. He simply made a video plain and simple. And with research with this site you can come pretty close to pay dirt on those lakes and others. But you still gotta to do the 'catching'..
