Anyone know of a foraging expert in the BWCA who might be willing to teach me a few things? Doing a solo trip in August and want to find a teacher for a few days in June or July. Background... I have been on several trips with small groups in Quetico and many solos in the states but never foraging. I’d like to add that this time but only a few simple, easily identifiable plants to add to the trip and I want to be well-trained on those few plants since I’m solo. Any direction would be appreciated.

I don't anyone, but there are a few books on the subject. Blueberries, strawberries and Raspberries are obvious edibles. I enjoy eating the Wintergreen Berries and I make tea with the leaves. The Dewberry is also a treat if you can find them ( a single berry that looks similar to a raspberry. While the Blue-Bead Lily berry is poisonous, the leaves are very edible-tastes like cucumber. Later in the summer they can get a bit bitter though. Bunch Berries are also edible but have little taste. Rose Hips are also a good eat but don't ripen until the fall. But you can make tea with the flowers. Sweet fern, Labrador Tea, and Sweet Gale are all good to make tea with too. I don't like mushrooms so I can't help you with those, but there are a few that are edible in the boundary waters.

Thank you Egknuti. I’ll read up on all those. Truly appreciate the reply.

North House Folk School is offering a course on mushrooms

Samuel Thayer is one of my favorite authors regarding the topic of foraging for edibles. He is WI based so the plants he discusses are found in our area, though not all of them in the Bdub, of course).

I have 2 of his books but it appears he has a 3rd I might have to get.

I also just got this book this spring and am taking it on my next trip. Not focused on edibles but it does mention them. It is an entertain ing book to read and is focused on the BWCA.

I also just found this website with courses on edibles. This is new so I have not tried out any of the classes yet. Eat the Planet

About 10 years ago, we attended the Midwest Wild Harvest Festival. Super cool family experience! Wild Harvest Festival

This is one of the best books I’ve found on your question. Look at the top of the page under books. Flora in canoe country
