I like the food system I have used for decades ( not one issue ever in the BWCA, national forests, state camp grounds etc) but the rules look to be changing and I will guess I need to go along. I don't like the idea of a hard shelled bear vault with limited capacity and same weight and volume in the pack day one or day ten. Ursacks seem to be the best way meet the requirements but are damn pricey. The cost of two Ursacks would finance most of my two planned trips in 2022.
Hanging is a poor option, ropes, pullies, sky hooks, throw bags, catapults etc and that is if you can find two trees to cooperate.
The rant is over so does anyone know of a less expensive alternative to the Ursack brand of approved food system?

I have not found anything and that is why I decided to bite the bullet and purchased the AllMitey Kodiak for my 2022 trip

I remember a few years ago the legendary Kanoes organized a BWCA.com group buy with Ursack. I did a search on this site, it happened in the summer of '15. Kanoes asked who would be interested in participating, and contacted Ursack and asked to see if they would discount their price. Looks like he got about 30 or so people to make the buy. Times may be different, I don't know what the Ursack supply chain looks like in these times, but it might be worth a shot. Just a suggestion, and I'm not volunteering (!!!!) to contact Ursack.

Years ago I went to Ursack's as I was loosing roll top waterproof bags regularly to chewing vermin. Even when hung up. It turned to a money saver for me.
The big thing is to obtain the certification and approval for the storage system. This pretty much rules out DIY projects.

If you email me we may come up with a solution.

If my memory is correct, the famous Kanoes order was before the originator sold Ursack to the current company. So don’t expect them to remember the process. But they still might enjoy a big order and offer something.
