You may want to consider renting a pack from one of the many outfitters in the area. Daily rates are reasonable and it gives you a chance to try a pack and you can decide to make a purchase at a later date if you discover that canoe tripping is going to be a part of your life. If you make that decision there are also lots of options to purchase used gear from outfitters at the end of the season.

Maybe someone here will let you borrow a pack. I live in eastern Wisconsin, otherwise I’d help you with that.
"Keep close to Nature's heart, yourself; and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean." ~ John Muir

Are you in the Twin Cities? I may have a pack you could borrow. I have both a decent backpack and a good Portage pack, which is actually better suited to a BWCA canoeing trip. I have a trip scheduled for the last week of May, that is the only time the portage pack would not be available.
I am pretty sure you will love it and be back:)

Not sure if your previous three posts were for Alpine or for borrowing from me. Those dates coincide with my trip so the portage pack might not be available, but the backpack would be. But, I am also considering buying a new portage pack and if I do that, they would both be available. I am in Eagan, just south of Alpinebrule so, either way, you would be going to the south metro.
