Just curious to see what typical set-up for most people is...

When fishing a fluorocarbon leader for walleye or smallmouth, how long is your leader and what knot do you tie on the jig/lure end?

Yes, I use a 25-50 lb fluorocarbon leader between 3-6 feet for a lot of my bwca fishing. I primarily tie a Fisherman's knot or Palomar knot but sometimes use a uni knot. In thinking about this question, I'm not sure I could give a rationale for any over the other...I have a pattern but mix it up slightly, perhaps as a metaphor for my life!

YetiJedi, are you using this leader primarily to prevent pike from biting you off?

I use 8 or 10lb braid and the same # flurocarbon. Most often 8# fluro. I hate having to rejoin my braid and fluro so I elect going with a much longer leader so I have less chance of having to re-tie. I usually have 10-15 foot fluro leader. I don't love the knot going in and out of the guides all the time but have never had an issue with it and I feel its best for me for efficiency.

I almost always tie Palomar knots. I have never used fluro more than 14lb other than for A-rigs. Not sure why you would ever use more than 12 or 14# unless your are targeting pike specifically.

I use 15lb J-Braid x8 and 8/10lb fluoro leader. There's a noticeable difference between 8 and 10 if fishing the gnarly rocks...you do give up a smidge of natural action if using 1/8oz with the stiffer 10lb so I might go to 3/16 with it. I too like a longer leader in that 6-8' range so I can get a couple re-ties out of it. I use alberto/modified albright or FG knot for connection and double san diego or "careful" palomar for terminal.

I almost always use a fluoro leader when using braid as a mainline. Partially for water clarity reasons, partially for abrasion resistance, and partially for some stretch when using braid. Length depends but I'd say don't overthink it -- 3-6' is usually fine (stretching out your arms and doing one to the width of your wingspan is usually close to 6' FYI).

My setup usually goes as follows:
1. Tie braid direct to a size 10 or 8 Spro Power Swivel using a Palomar knot. Spending a few bucks upfront on small, extremely high quality swivels pays dividends IMO. Reduces line twist immensely.
2. Tie my Fluoro leader to the swivel using a Trilene Knot. Usually 6-8lb leader depending on mainline.
3. Tie either direct to your jig or to a tiny snap of some kind using a palomar/trilene knot.

Good to go. The snap is nice to prevent having to re-tie so often but its a case by case use. tiny panfish jigs I wouldnt use one, but most walleye jigs, jigging raps, crankbaits, etc I will use one.

I use 10lb braid and 10lb Fluoro leader on my Pflueger Supreme XT 30's on Medium/fast and Medium/extra fast 7 foot rods - Bass, Walleye, Trout rigs. These fluoro leaders are about 8' long each. I can cut baits off, without having to re-tie a new leader as much.

I use 15lb braid and 40lb fluoro lead on my Plueger Supreme 35 with a medium/fast 7 foot rod - Pike rig. This leader is about 4' long. The thicker leader won't cut from a big pike or Musky (should one jump one). But the leader is shorter, as the knot won't go through the guides as easily. I'm also going to use this rig for Kings in the fall...

All leaders tied to braid with the Alberto knot. It's nice and small, and fits through the guides really easy - and I have small guides on my rods on the two walleye/bass rods. The guides are bit bigger on the Pike rod, but the knot is also bigger...

Yep. Should have noted I always trip with two rods. One is set up hoping to catch a big pike. The other is set up with 10 lb fluorocarbon for smallies and walleyes.

Once in a while I'll bring a flyrod and I'll use a 10' tapered leader.
