We are moving to Duluth, so we will need to find somewhere to store canoes for a bit, maybe a few months.

This move is sure to be somewhat complex process as we sell our NM home, and purchase a MN home. We are substituting Duluth Scouting for a BWCA 10 day trip in first three weeks of June.

We may need to obtain covered, secure storage space for 2 solos [13' &17'] as well as one 19' tandem, along with some paddles and a couple of black tubs w/yellow tops for gear. We can bring quality sawhorses and boards to keep these boats off the floor.

We are of course willing to pay for this service, though happy to keep money in our pockets.

Does anyone have some space to let out, or know of folks providing this service?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you might be able to provide.

Congratulations Jim! I wish I could help you on the canoe storage. Unfortunately, my own canoes take up all of my free space. Although I can’t help, I wanted to be one of the first to welcome you to Minnesota. You’re going to love the Duluth area, it’s a great place to live and I hope you enjoy it. Best of luck in finding some secure storage space, my guess is you’ll find something pretty quick either from someone on this forum or a public storage space in Duluth.

Here’s a couple reminders to prepare you for life in Minnesota…

Ope= what is said when something unexpected happens.

Soda= pop

Those things mounted to the wall that you drink from: drinking fountains (not bubblers, no matter what those cheeseheads across the border try to tell you).

“Uff da”- endless uses, can be used in moments of surprise, relief, disgust, bewilderment, etc.

“Duck, Duck, Gray Duck”- the game, played the right way.

“Minnesota Good Bye”- lasts around 10 minutes, announce your departure, then proceed to chat for several minutes in the entryway, then step outside and continue for several more minutes, then move farther away as you continue to chat until you can no longer hear each other, then continue on your way…late to wherever you are headed.

“Yah, you betcha, o-for”- all three of these are used so often you won’t even notice after a few days. Example: Minnesotan 1: “want to get get a Juicy Lucy from the 5-8 Club?” MN 2: “yah, you betcha, sounds like a helluva good time…o-for Pete’s sake, I left my keys in the house, I’ll be right back, don’t leave “withoot” me.”

“Against”- pronounced “ah-gaaaynst”- “Uffda, that tripping call agaaainst the Gophers was a load of bull, I’ll be that refs getting a lump of coal in his stocking this year.”

“Hotdish” - casserole or any baked concoction served family style.

ATM = ATM or instant cash machine, again those “Sconnies” will try to tell you it’s a Tyme machine. Proper response to such nonsense…“O- for stupid, it’s not a time machine, Marty, go back to the future already.”

All joking aside, welcome and best of luck in the move.

Tony you made my day. Jim’s a friend of mine and I’m here to tell you that you two would get along fabulously.

Only guessing but stored diagonally in a storage unit may be an option. Or outside in a fenced in storage yard. For a few months tarp covered should be ok

Hey at least all you need to do is switch the NM to MN around and you're good still for usernames. (if no one has it)

NMJim, would love to hear a little more about your decision to plant yourself up Nort der. Maybe someday I'll be able to convince my wife to do the same.

And to add to this bit of wisdom...

"NMJim, would love to hear a little more about your decision to plant yourself up Nort der."

I love this site for its sense of community and the good humor infused comments. And though we are completely jammed prepping for our move, I would be more than remiss if I did not reply to a few of you asking why the heck might we be moving 'up Nort der' from beautiful northern New Mexico.

We might never have decided to leave our home here, though my moderate COPD does dictate keeping a lower weight so that I get around with ease. I wish I could share what finally kicked us with some humor, but sadly, that is not the case.

The Great West, and in particular, our nuevo mexico is suffering high heat, winds and aridness not seen in 1200 years. The consequences are devastating wildfires wiping out large areas of our lands. For humans, the least of damage is the huge volumes of smoke that make being outside extremely unhealthy. The norteño rural way of life that has been around for 400 years may be gone. Wildlife, well you can imagine. And out native flora may never grow back the same, as the climate that once nurtured new forests is just gone.

The statement that this sort of aridness has not been seen in 1200 years is a matter of factual science, not speculation. These sorts of conditions were part of the breakdown of the Chacoan Culture.

We have some sad days here in the Southwest. We are excited to find refuge in what we know is a beautiful small city, set like a jewel in the crown of the Upper Midwest. We are led there by our experiences in the BWCA, and by other friends who also are climate change refugees who are already in Duluth, or are considering similar treks.

Thanks to all for your kind words. Tight lines, and secure the grub, See ya soon enough!

However, in Duluth we say "goose". Just a little correction. I hope you enjoy your time in Duluth.

Now you’re talking!

Interesting and somewhat depressing context to your decision but something tells me you’re going to love having access to the great north woods 365. Safe travels and hope the move goes smoothly for you. These are exciting times!

Congratulations Jim,

I lived in NM (Socorro area) and fought lots of wildfires in that state and loved living there, I now live in Duluth. I have always been a Minnesotan no matter where I lived. Housing is tough in Duluth now, they do not stay on the market long.
If you get into a pinch I should be able to help you out with one canoe and a few totes in our garage until October when I put my camper away in the garage again.

Follow this link for storage places in Duluth.

And I too have a rack overlooking my living room just vacated... Linden comes by now and again. You’d be welcome to come visit and paddle an hour west of Duluth. 4th of July we have a few hearty campers that come to celebrate from this group every year.

I just saw NMJim today, I wish to welcome him to Duluth, you have chosen a great place to live. Jim has been here for 6 months now and lives a mile or so from me.
