For part of our upcoming trip we're going to be fishing for walleyes on the Canadian side of border a couple border lakes, so we will not be able to bring any live bait whatsoever -- not even dead salted minnows are allowed. I do love to toss a slip bobber out while the other 2 guys in the boat are casting -- mostly because 3 people casting gets awfully tight in a small fishing boat, and I also just enjoy the rest.

So my questions: do gulp leeches actually work under a slip bobber, or do they need to be jigged to be effective? Which specific package do folks prefer? Standard Gulp or Gulp Alive? Different brand? What size works best? I was at Cabelas last night and all I could find was a package of 8 that didn't look anything like real leeches -- they must have been 5" long. Price worked out to over $1 per leech, so I passed. I don't mind spending some money on them, but they've gotta be convincing.

Disclaimer….I am not a walleye fisherman. Last spring I brought along a container of 3” gulp leaches. Every evening I tossed a slip bobber out in front of camp for a couple of hours for 6 days and never got 1 bite. We were based on Vista lake on the 5 star southern site and I had read many reports of people catching walleye from that site. Not sure if it was user error or if fish were not in the area. If you decide to bring them or I hope you have a great trip!

My suggestion….hook the gulp through the head, slide it up the shank, spin around and sit the neck on top of the barb. This will set the leech horizontal and give it some action as your bobber rides the waves…windy is good. It will never be as effective as the real thing but this should help.

I've brought them a couple of times and really struggled to catch walleye. I'll always opt for live leeches now.
