It's been awhile since I posted on here, but this board has always been an invaluable resource when searching and posing questions.

Anyway, our group of 6 to 9 guys (depending on availability) decided on this year's route this past weekend, and we plan on starting at the McFarland Lake Campground and doing a loop through the Pike Lakes and back through the Canadian border lakes. This is our first time going in on the far east portion of the BWCA. This will be year 14... I think, so we are fairly experienced.

We use outfitters for canoes, and from what I can tell, the closest outfitter that services this area would be Clearwater Outfitters. Of course "closest" is all relative, and there's a steep fee to get canoes out there. We don't mind paying it if it's truly the best option.

For those that have been in this area before, is Clearwater Outfitter the best option for canoes? What about the permit? We would be picking the permit up Saturday before hitting the water Sunday, exact dates yet to be decided.

What about Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte. Grab them on the way up the north shore.

McFarland is not an entry point. I believe the actual permit you would want would be Pine Lake #68. The BWCA actually starts right around that little riffle between Pine and McFarland lakes.

I agree that Sawtooth Outfitters might be the best option for you. Right on your way, no detours. They are great to work with, I have been using them for several years. As long as you have a couple vehicles they should be able to mount enough canoes for your group.

You're right about the EP. There's actually 3 right in that area, and I believe we will be using EP 69 John Lake. Had McFarland on the mind due to the campground.
