Ohh boy. I’m reading a story in the Duluth News Tribue about a land swap with Twin Metals. They are petitioning the Dept. of the Interior to Annex Bald Eagle And Gabbro Lake for a mine tailings pond in exchange for some land by Birch Lake they had previously planned to dry stack tailings on. We’ll see if that one works out.

True story, I was on a wildfire in Montana out in the sticks by Gates of the Mountains. We were spiked out on the fire line and I stayed in an ex-governors mansion in the mountains for about 6 nights.

The Minnesota Governor's Mansion is set to undergo a $6.3 million refurbishment, but the choice of temporary accommodation for Gov. Walz and his family is drawing attention for its $17,000-a-month cost.

It was confirmed this week by the Minnesota Department of Administration that Minnesota's First Family have to relocate until September 2024 while work is carried out on the historic Governor's Mansion on St. Paul's Summit Avenue.

Per a lease agreement, the alternative housing takes the form of a 7,952 sq. ft. mansion in the exclusive east metro suburb of Sunfish Lake, which property records shows is owned by former Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike McFadden.

The 18-month lease will come to a total sum of $314,662.50, just under $17,500-a-month, which has raised eyebrows since it was revealed and has prompted criticism from Republicans who argue he should be looking for cheaper options. The outlay doesn't include a $15,000 payment for carpet replacement at the property.

Per Minnesota law, the governor's residences must be capable of hosting "official ceremonial functions of the state, and to provide suitable living quarters for the governor of the state."

The Sunfish Lake residence at 25 Sunny Side Lane is about half the size of the Governor's Mansion, which clocks in at 16,000 sq. ft., with Racket MN tracking down an old property listing for the home.

Bring Me The News asked the Department of Administration and Walz's office for the reasoning behind the choice of property, and the cost it entails.


The Department of Administration provided this response: "

"The Department of Administration consulted with real estate and executive housing professionals to explore options on the market that could meet operational and security needs as well as proximity to the Capitol. There were very limited options with our criteria available during the necessary time period. The current lease was negotiated with the owner with a rate of return based on market value and the limited comparable rates available on potential properties."

Sunfish Lake is one of the few locations in Minnesota where the average house sells for more than $1 million, according to Zillow.

Among the Republicans criticizing the outlay is Rep. Paul Novotny, who said this home on Lake Phalen was arguably more suitable at a price of $4,500-a-month, albeit at 4,700 sq. ft. it's considerably smaller than the Sunfish Lake home, and almost a quarter the size of the Governor's Mansion.

He argued it's "tone-deaf" for Walz to charge taxpayers $17,000-a-month in rent payments "for a palatial lakeside mansion" at a time of high interest rates and inflation.

"There are hundreds of much more affordable options that the governor could have pursued that would have saved taxpayers money," he argues. "Additionally, if space was a concern, there are plenty of venues like the Landmark Center or other facilities around St. Paul that could host events for the governor instead of at this home."
