I always overpack and wondering your thoughts on, assuming primarily bottom fishing, how many jig heads to bring per day of fishing. I am thinking minimum of 5 per full day of fishing. Maybe upwards of 10. I know it will vary based on a lot of factors, but on average, how many would you pack to be safe?

It could easily be 5-10 per day depending on how adept you are at dislodging them from snags. The combination of bendable hooks, monofilament line and your own personal skill level at getting them out of a snag will be the determining factors.

Your one big fishing trip per year? 10 jig heads per day for sure. Eight guys at fish camp?? You could get by with less, but bring whiskey and tobacco for trading.

At least 10, they’re cheap, don’t expire and pack well.

Also you will “need” a few colors of each weight and a couple different styles (live bait/plastics).

Then you might find fish on soft bottom flats and leave the same jig tied on all week.

I lose maybe 10-12 jigs on a week long fishing trip, so that works out to an average of around 2 lost per day. Perhaps I spend more time trying to retrieve jigs and I find I can usually pop them out of rock wedges, and sometimes the hooks bend out of wood, but wood definitely confiscates more jigs. Your line is going to play a factor too. I use braid exclusively, so I have next to no stretch and stronger line to help retrieve snags.

That said, I take way more jigs than I intend to use each trip, as I find they provide good ballast for the canoe. :)
