Jjwhispersocks: "Dunno if my other attempt to post was effective. Are we still barred from POE 54 bc of the new eagle nest? TIA!"
Can you explain further your question? Are you asking if Entry point 54 Sea Gull Lake is limited access because of an eagle's nest currently there? This is the first I have heard of this if true.
Thank you.

Nest. Nest. Yes. Last year when we arrived at 54, we were blocked off bc eagles had built a nest nearby(not very close). The rangers had signs up warning of fines up to $5k, take a different entry. So we had to take another entry (53?). What with the turbulent waters and downed trees we had a horrible time getting into Seagull. We did capsize a few days later, got caught at the next portage in rapids and rocks, but survived. Losing only our poles, we headed back out. We saw the waters were horribly turbulent the way we came in, so we figured it was worth $5k not to capsize again. We quietly came out safely at 54. Wondering if it’s still blocked off.

I haven't heard about this at all. I guess the best way to get a definitive answer is to reach out to the Gunflint Ranger Station in Grand Marais. (218) 387-1750.
If you find out anything, please let us know. I just happen to have a permit for Seagull July 22.
PS, it sounds like you went in last May when water was crazy?

We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll go paddle.

We’re both 70, so on good days the BWCAW is challenging. We got caught in torrents and swept into a boulder, capsized, had to swim holding the canoe about 200 ft to the bank. Luckily everything was jammed in it when we righted it, except our poles. We both had our paddles! So cold!! So we paddled to the nearest camp, strung a line, and hung stuff up. Had some ramen soup- our clothes and sleep bags were well wrapped so they were dry. Coming out a couple days later the water was still in dicy , but we did ok. Like I said, I was ready to pay the fine rather than face the torrents I saw across the way.
I will call the ranger and check. Thx much for your reply.

Just talked to the ranger station. She didn’t know anything about the eagle’s nest or closing 54. Also she said there is still some ice. Not much rain like last year so no horrible conditions to report. Last year Sag was up 8 ft over normal she said.
If we make it out alive I’ll post what we find. Heading in this Monday.

I remember the closure last year. It turned out the eagles hadn’t used that nest in years and it was lifted in early June. Yes water was high last year!
Thanks for the report. I hope you have a great trip and I look forward to report….. If you survive!

Closing the entry is ridiculous.
Here in DesPlaines IL, I saw an eagle flying in front of the casino, (it's near the River) just last week.
I saw one a few weeks ago flying over circles over Milwaukee Ave a little further North of DesPlaines.
And a few years ago saw one hovering over a city park in Niles, IL.

There’s always a slew of canoes at 54, I imagine they are for the guide’s customers. I’m sure it wouldn’t go over well to enter elsewhere. . I’ve not witnessed any rowdy ppl at the BWCAW in our decade of visits, so I believe if there were eagles, ppl would be quiet and respectful. We got this.
