If you haven't heard the latest Boundary Waters Podcast on WTIP, check it out (episode 90) with a trip report from last week's opener on Baker Lake.

It's a good reminder that even experienced paddlers can get in trouble and a great example where PFDs can save a life.

An important reminder that bad things can happen to anyone at anytime.

Harrowing experience. I'm glad they are safe. There were several points in their situation where things could have gotten much worse. Take care out there folks.

Wow. Glad they made it
I’ve been there twice and was worried about getting pulled down the rapids. The first time there was after a lot of rain and I was warned about it by the outfitter when I picked up the permit because multiple groups had been sucked down it the previous couple of days.

A good listen and everyone should listen to this.

A couple things I will take away from this. For the rescuers, number one is to keep yourself safe. Number two is get the other guys safe and remember the guys in the water are disoriented. Like they said, they stood around 'in' the water. Coach them to get out of the water and get safe.

Once everyone is safe, stop and get everyone together to plan the next move. One guy going out solo in the one remaining canoe may not be the best idea.

Just some thoughts

Scary account. Moving water is treacherous. A good reminder to ask the rangers or outfitters if there are dangerous rapids or alternative portages near falls along your intended route, especially in high water season.

Many of us know that portage, I did it solo in mid June of 2018 and even then you had to be careful not to get swept down stream.
