The evening started by foiling my photo session with rain, twice, though persistence provided some neat green goblin shots. Tried again last night though got stormed out. At the CCO campground for a bit, working on a little surprise, something which I think will be a first. Grandma L, bless them, previously shared my itinerary, I believe pass two will be Knife Lake instead of Ledge - I am trying to get a nice NE night sky view for the Perseids meteor shower mid-August.

Big Gulp?

It’s so cute!

What a wonderful journey (again)!

I'm putting in on Seagull, looping to Alpine, Sag and back down on 6/22, then a short solo out of Sawbill on 6/30, then a loop from Snowbank-Perent-Disappointment-Jordan-Cattyman and down to Snowbank again.

If you're in those areas, I hope we cross paths.

Darn good pictures.

Are those Northern Lights? Or is it a special effect from those fancy new Iphones?
Good to hear the bumper crop of mosquitos didn't suck you dry. You must have spent a lot of time in your tent or searching for wind exposed campsites. We're headed in on 8/22 to a Quetico Carp entry so we'll be passing through that area in a month.
Great pictures. To me catching a good image is just(almost) as much fun as catching fish!

Hey One!atch!
I just finished up supper with WHendrix - he shared that you are quite the artist :)

Alpine was on the route earlier, before the spice lake fire closed the region. Thinking I’ll be around Knife/Birch taking astro photos in August & about Lake One - Rice Lake duck/grouse hunting Sept/Oct.

If our paths don’t cross this year, hopefully they do someday.
Cheers!

Thanks!

Will work on getting a flicker or something set up to share the larger portfolio.

The green one is from Thursday-Friday when lights were forecast to be potent red one from night before. I think it is a mix of lights & camera catching light, it was not as spectacular to the naked eye though I was in my tent/asleep when these particular shots were taken (intervelometer for the win! Spelling?). No iPhone though I will say the iPad mini does have a pretty solid camera. These are taken w a Fuji xt-4 w xf8-16mm lens. S.s. 40” ISO 3200 F2.8 for astro shots. Fuji sensor is particularly adept at catching faint astral light.

Mosquitos at times have been brutal & I wasn’t opposed to chilling in the tent playing risk/catan on my phone or reading/whatever a few days haha. I brought up one of those small bottles of 98% deet & it saved my sanity a few times on travel days. At some portages they were so thick it was maddening & I inhaled many more this year compared to last. It was very dry for a stretch though it has relieved. One day my camp on Knife had some very thirsty looking grass & I spent a few hours watering it & a young white pine haha. It was interesting to see how a bit of water gave them some visible rejuvenation.

I agree w fishing & photography. I find more & more that I prefer taking photos. I like fishing early/late season when it is less stressful on the fish & bigger fish are more accessible, unless I’m planning to eat my catch. ‘Happiness means nothing if not shared.’ - its possible to capture & share a bit of the happiness had up here via photography.

Tim is going to be in that region about the same time. I’m planning to be on Knife/S Arm mid-August & likely ~Carp/Birch the last week of August. Trying to link up w Tim on Birch/Carp 8/30. I may try to get that US-side campsite on Carp ~last week of August, it is usually open & would be a known location for them to target.

Best wishes for all your upcoming adventures, JohnGalt. Someday, our paths may cross. Until then, I hope you continue to smile at the lightening and and laugh at the whitecaps.

I recall, about two years ago now - 11.2021 - a thread replete with salty commentary doubting your intents and follow-through. None labeled you as ridiculous and an idiot, as I have been labeled, but they came close. Nevertheless, you persisted. Well done. God speed. It's worth it .

Kind comments, JillPine, and I echo your sentiments regarding John's adventures and plans. They inspire me to at least think about what it would be like but, alas, I will most likely not have the courage to give them a try.

John, keep living your good life and loving it all! It is good for my soul to read about your experiences as well as the insights you share on this board.

And, JillPine, I for one appreciate your comment on this thread and many of the other insights you have shared. Never met you but consider you a wise and kind person. To that point, I think you did a free dehydrated meal giveaway shortly after I joined the website. It might have been as part of a trip you took and later posted photos...not remembering exactly, but I do remember the impact your report and kindness had on me as I was starting out in the canoe wilderness tripping stage of my life. So thank you. :)

Thank you, YetiJedi :). I'm hoping to up my game here shortly with regard to content creation (much of it is collecting dust on a hard drive). I created a twitter, @GGWoodsman, to accompany the youtube channel (which I'll soon stop neglecting). Flicker account is next on the list to create. Looking forward to sharing more of the outdoors with you soon!
