Hi friends,
Let's say a guy was headed to Ram Lake for fishing opener this year- any tips? I know it is a trout lake but I think it's one of those rare lakes that have both rainbow and lakers. In any case- definitely all ears on how best to catch either! I have caught rainbows on crawlers with a slip bobber and that worked but any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I know on Trout Lake (the one close to Grand Marais ) I have had success with small rapala like lures that are shallow divers trolled. Maybe a small split shot 3' above it?
Small mepps spinners also.
that what I would start with on Ram if it was me.

Same tactics that work for Lakers would also work for Rainbows...just size down the lure a bit. I like trolling inline spinners or spoons.
From camp - I'd bring a worm blower and float a crawler a few feet off the bottom.

I've not fished Ram, other than trolling it on my way in or out. But Little Trout a few lakes in was awesome. We have been there twice in the middle of summer and caught lakers all over that lake, even shallow from shore in August. That lake is a gem. We fed our whole crew after fishing for one hour, and turning a number of fish loose. I can't imagine that lake in May!
I used a blue kastmaster with a white tail. We also caught them on a copper blue fox.
I've caught lots of brookies in the BW with the irredecent Panther Martin. I don't know if rainbows would be similar or not. (The only thing I've seen stocked rainbows caught here in Illinois with is canned corn!)
Good luck!

Same lures for brookies or rainbows work. I just switch up the colors. Brookies seem to prefer red and gold, while rainbows like blue and silver.
It's not universal, but where I usually start color wise. I'll switch it up from there if it's not working.

schwartyman: "still fishing ram for opener WanderingWoodsmanMN?
You betcha! Just hoping that ice will be out but it sounds like it will be super close. Never fished it before but the tips here will hopefully help. Here's to hoping a trout fish fry will be happening Saturday night.

schwartyman: "Cool.. ill be out there too this weekend hopefully doing the same. Ill be in a red solo canoe. Good luck!"
Schwaytyman- were you able to get out on Ram for opener? I tried to go in on Thursday for my permit but the shoreline was still iced in just enough that I could not make it work. Had to pivot to a backup plan. Hope you got in and found some trout!
