mountainrunner,
Thanks for a interesting report and some great pictures. The versatility of this great area is brought home by your shared experience.

Great report. Brought back a lot of great memories (nightmares?) of my hike on the kek last year.
We went in the summer. Aside from the wet spots, I think spring would be better. No skeeters, no blazing sun, thinner forest and you can see the bears from a distance so they don't sneak up on you.
You guys are troopers doing the whole thing like that. I am a very unexperienced hiker and only did from the EP to Drumstick lake. I hear you on the benenzie trail. We couldn't even find it last summer. The clear cut area was hell in the summer and GPS was needed.
Anyways, that's awesome. You guys would be fun to hike with even though I'd probably pay hell trying to keep up.

Todd,
Thanks for writing the report! Pretty impressive first post to BWCA.com too! You have a better memory for the trail than I do. I will add a few things to this thread when I get some more time.
It was a good trip and after a couple weeks I have recovered pretty well!

Cool to read a hiking report. Nice job. I have hiked Glacier Nat. Park too back in the 80's. Haven't backpacked since then but have gotten the urge again lately. I also can sympathise with the foot blisters. That can be extremely painful. Gotta bring plenty of moleskin.
BTW, some of the pics weren't able to be enlarged.

I just hiked the Kek from west to east just before Mem Day weekend. First night I camped at Medas which I found to be quite nice. I sleep in a hammock so what I look for in a campsite is different than tenters. Give me 2 branchless trees about 10 to 12 feet apart and I think it's great. Harness was terrible only place for a hammock was across the trail. I thought Howard was good as it had two nice big cedars not far from the water. The firegrate area sucked though. I have camped on 3 of the 4 camps on Benezie/Becoosin and have liked all 3. Again hammock vs tent.
Glad you had a great trip. Next you should hike the Border Route. Probably the best of the BWCAW.

Talusman, thank you for your post. Matt and I will certainly be looking at another hike up there next spring. Maybe we'll make it the BRT. I think Matt has been wanting to get onto the Sioux-Hustler Trail for a while now.
On those camp sites around Benenzie/Becoosin. There is one site in particular that I love on Becoosin. I've scouted the site on the opposite end of the lake and it did not look bad. Benenzie - the sites did nothing for me (being a tent camper). The trail is in bad shape around the entire loop.
I'm glad you had a great trip. Maybe see you out there sometime.
