A good start to your adventures! Now you know what NOT to do, and can expand your horizons. No loose gear in the canoe is a good goal, and the sleeping pads make life much warmer and more comfortable. Thanks for sharing....how about some of those photos?

I will try to find some photos to add. Unfortunately I will have to convert them to digital. We both forgot to bring a camera so Peter picked up a disposable. This year I plan on greatly improving upon the photography!

No need to be embarrassed about the gear you took. You just have to learn from each trip and make improvements every year.

I'm curious to know if you used a pad under your bag at night?

I remember my first trip and you would have laughed at what I brought. I had a duffle bag for the food that was hell to portage. I wore converse high tops with cotton socks and had blisters after day two. No portage yoke, just strapped the paddles along the gunwales and rested them on my shoulders. Not a good idea to say the least.

Interesting what lessons you learn from experience. Sounds like you had a great time despite some tough cold conditions and circumstances.
It will be better traveling next time, from what you learn the first time. I don't figure you ever stop tweaking what your going to do or bring and how it will play out. Freat memories were made.

I remember my first trip to the BWCA, August 06.
Thank god we had someone in our group that went there often or me and my two sons (5 & 7 then) would have been much worse off! We have been going back every year since. Everytime improving on what we bring and how we pack it.
Gaining that experience has made for some great memories.
