I was on Three during that storm too. The hail was pretty cool, about nickel size and really cold. Took a long time to melt.

My dog refused to come out of the back of tent until it was over. The hail beat the crap out of the pines and they ended up smelling awesome!

We were headed up to Ely early AM on 5/24 and drove through some hail just out of Virginia. Then east of Soudan the highway was completely covered with hail with hail drifts on the sides of the road - pea to marble sized. We pulled into Ely at 5:30 am and the streets were bone dry.

How long of a paddle/portgage is it from Lake One to Insula if you just go straight there??

Thanks for the report. We are making that same trip 6/15. I was told the smallmouth fishing on Insula is pretty poor. Was that your experience? How is the landing on the island you camped on? Was there a fire ban?

With a steady, but leisurely pace, we made it to Insula in 5 1/2 hours from Lake One.

I was on Alice Lake and watched that storm roll through from a distance. Weather radio said it was going to hit Lake Three. Guess it did. Must have rumbled constant for over an hour. It rained on Alice, but nothing more than heavy showers. The lightning looked wicked from a distance...

We did the Lake One to Insula in about 7 hours. We double tripped the portages and got lost a few times. We were also pretty leisurely. The campsites we checked out were all very nice and had no problems with landings. There was no fire ban as well.

As for smallmouth, we caught a nice sized one right off the back of the camp, there's a rock you can fish off of. Very tasty with curried vegetables. Hint: look straight down off that rock. Plenty of big ones hanging out by spawning beds.

I took video of the storm, but I'm not sure if I can upload it here. We watched lightening strikes across the lake, they kept coming closer and closer. Luckily it passed over us, as it was starting to get alarming. Luckily it didn't happen at night!
