Is it still worth the time and effort to bring a fly rod for the second week of July? Is it too late for smallmouth fishing on top water?
I have panfished with the flyrod for about 30 years, but would like to start gamefishing. Any tips or tackle suggestions?

By all means, bring a flyrod. Concentrate on low light conditions. An 8wt. and a big popper around weedbeds at sunrise will draw strikes from pike and SMB, and a 4in. Clouser minnow at near dark will catch pike, SMB, and the occassional walleye.
