Had a great time on Crocodile Lake. It was a bit chilly but mostly fair weather with a east wind. We were afraid it would shut off the fishing but it turned out good. Lots of eater sized walleyes and a couple of huge fish fry dinners.

Hey Jamotrade, I fish east bearskin every year. Never fished croc. I always tried to talk the group into just walking up from bearskin to try it. What do ya think. Worth a hike, leave the boat/motor down and
fish croc from shore? if so , what would you bring? How long/far from the creek/bearskin is it??

HMMMMMM... not sure whether it would be worth fishing from shore since it's pretty shallow in most parts and the walleyes are probably a bit deeper. However, towing a canoe and portaging it with paddles and fishing gear would be well worth the effort. We saw a few fishing boats tied up at the landing when we got there. They just went in for the day to fish. The portage is about 120 rods and it's uphill for the first half but without camping gear it's not too hard. I would bring a bunch of chartreuse jigs and a bunch of leeches. What month are you thinking of going there?

Unfortunately not until end of july. It will be hot so I am sure they
will be deeper. So it sounds like there isn't a lot of fishing deep from shore. Thank kind of stinks, still maybe worth it. I can rent a canoe from east bearskin and conoe right over I guess. Hmmmmm
maybe worth it. Jigs huh, Do you have a pic of one?? I honestly dont use a lot of jigs, which probable explains my lack of descent walleye numbers, mainly a bass guy, but branching out slowly. lol, thanks

Nice fish Jam, crocodile is an excellent lake for walleyes, they arent big but they sure taste like heaven.

Here's a pic of a jighead for you. All you need to do is hook a leech through the sucker and bounce it along the bottom. You will feel a tap, tap, tap when a walleye is biting it. At that point you give it line for about 5 seconds and set the hook. Fun way to fish!

Great pics Jamotrade and thanks for sharing. We spent last weekend at East Bearskin campground and if it would have been just us and the kids we would have for sure done a daytrip over to croc. We didn't want to desert my inlaws and they weren't up for the trip over.

snohr12: We stayed at the Bearskin Lodge a few years ago in Oct. They have journals for the guests to write about their stay in. All of the "good fishing" entries were about people that daytripped over to Croc. If you can talk the crew into it I would say go for it.

Too bad that you didn't get over there but it's tough for older folks on that portage. We ran into a father/son duo that were camping for a couple of days on Croc. the son was about 35 and the Dad was probably 60+. It didn't look like Dad was having a very good time on the mosquito infested, straight uphill portage from East Bearskin to Croc...

yeah ducks, How was the fishing on bearskin>? I am heading up in three weeks, three long slow weeks??? I am going to do it this year, I always read about croc from bearskin peps. Can I get a day pass from bearsking to fish croc? and Do they still rent canoes?

We only fished from shore w/ the kiddos and didn't catch anything. My inlaws had to pile in the van w/ us so we needed to use the car top luggage bag so we didn't have room to put the canoe on top. This trip was about just getting my father in law up there to enjoy a wonderful place and spending time w/ his grandkids. His cancer has progressed so far that they have stopped treatment.

I think Basspro69 has stated in other threads that East Bearskin is at the bottom of his list for motorized lakes in that area.

Yes, you can do a self issued day permit to go to croc from bearskin. you may want to grab some from the ranger station in grand marais in case the box is out at the east bearskin landing. Bearskin lodge may have some also.

Yes, you can still rent canoes from Bearskin Lodge.

Have fun, I can't wait to get back. I'm heading up the sawbill trail in 10 days.

I do know east bearskin has some very harsh critics, And I do agree, fishing can be stale at times. I have fished there over 25 times and
I think I have a handle on were to catch fish. And I have a 17 foot bass boat with a 75 hp, So its very limited to lakes up there.
