Huh? Do you mean "use it like an under-quilt?"
I have a Warbonnet Blackbird 1.7 DL. When I use a pad, the double layer makes it easy.
How cold? Depends on the type of pad & thickness. When the temp is below zero, I put everything available under me ... pad, under-quilt, pack, spare clothes, etc.

When I slept with a pad I did both ways, but its easier to use as a quilt since sometimes you need to move around a bit to get back on the pad. My bag had a very short zipper compared to my TQ so if anybody was watching me try and get in it, it must have looked like I was wrestling a small bear in my hammock.
As for pad temps it will depend on what type of pad you have. A thin theremarest with get cold faster than an exped. I have used my BA pad in the teens and been fine.

I'm new to this, but I got in my bag when it was cold. When it went down to 39, I was fully zipped and had it over my face and head. It's cumbersome, but a little easier to unzip and remove when warm than to climb in it while in the hammock when it's cold. Still experimenting.

No, I meant do you actually get into your bag and zip it, or do you use the bag as a top quilt with only the pad underneath.
I have a 1/2" closed cell pad, a blue Pamida special.
I am not ready for sub-zero camping yet. I am just looking forward to my trip at the end of May, so I would not expect anything under 20*.

Sorry, I misunderstood. I've never tried a sleeping bag in a hammock so my mind was just not thinking that way.
