Going to do a 6 day solo near late oct. Hunting is going to be the focus. Thinking maybe northwest. I really haven't done any duck hunting and want do some of this along with grouse and small game. I did really well last fall backpacking with my .22 but thinking shotgun for this trip. Any tips on getting ducks in the BWCA. Since they are migratory birds and are hunted hard they seem timid and fly off at the near sight of a person. Grouse on the other hand in the bwca dont get hunted much and are very easy to get if you find them. Any tips on how to bag a few ducks?
I need advice from other hunters that hunt bwca. I wont be trying to take a ton of game, few grouse and maybe a duck or two. Maybe River trip would be better than lake trip?
I was able to get close to a few Wood Ducks and Mallards in September by paddling quietly down the Isabella River heading out of Bald Eagle Lake. Well within gun range but if you are solo it might be hard to drop the paddle, grab the gun and get a good shot off. Most the time they flew before I got close but if they were in the taller weeds or around a corner I was sometimes able to get very close before they saw me. Also got close to some geese.
If you do hunt ducks, you'll for sure have to take the shotgun (it's the law). Not sure if I would hunt out of a solo canoe on a solo trip......too many things to go wrong for me. Hunting off the bank or wading the tall weeds....maybe. Sounds fun though. I've jumped a lot of ducks out of the wild rice in Nina Moose on late August trips and pondered the idea of a duck hunt in the BW.
