Kanoes, lots of info available on the Steel river at major Canadian canoeing web site. Let me know if you need the URL.

my brothers friend, a vermonter, has paddled the steel river. it a nice area but lots of logging nearby. (second hand info)
for a super river check out the kopka river, it flows into wabakimi and is renowned for it's beauty and wilderness challenges. i've only paddled about twenty miles of it, but it was an amazing trip. lots of whitewater here and some portages that are legendary.
maybe the wabakimi group has more info.
