Looking for anyone who has some firsthand knowledge of this trail. Any/all information is greatly appreciated.

I've hiked and camped on this trail twice, though it has been many years since. Once, we took the south loop to Herriman, and it wasn't worth the effort, imo. That loop was in MUCH need of attention, and while at the lake, you never really get a good view of the lake, as the trail ascends up around the back side, in the trees.
The loop to Dovre goes over some of the largest ledge rock areas that I have seen. Bring extra water on this loop. I don't recall much about the actual site on that end of the lake, except that it still had an old wooden 'thunder box', at that time. There was a nicer site on the other end of the lake, but I don't recall a trail between the two. That site was meant more for canoeists coming in off of L. Vermilion.
Knute is a small, dark water lake. The site was small, and full of wood ticks when we were there.
The L. Vermilion site is of course on busy, motorized waters. It is a beach site, with two fire grates. One for picnickers, and one for campers. This site of course can be used by motor boats with permits, or canoeists. Some people (no doubt with no permit) do pull in to use the beach during warm weather.
When I was there last, I had to wade through knee deep water on a section of the trail, because of recent beaver activity. They no doubt have done a re-route around that since.
Shoot for either the Dovre site, or the L. Vermilion site, or both if you plan a two night trip. Fall of course is always best for cool hiking, colors and fewer visitors at the L. Vermilion site. If you go in fall, bring a shot gun, as you will see some birds.
An added note: I've heard from the locals that there can be some awesome blue berry picking up around Baylis Lake, if you care to hike that far out of your way.
