Hey Chewy, How ya doing? I have gone out of Clearwater a few times. May can definitely be coldish. Clearwater can be windy also. Due to the palisades(bluffs). But get going early you'll be fine. In my opinion worth the chance of wind, for the beauty. The portages out of Clearwater and in to Mountain are a bit long and a bit hilly. Not super difficult though. Troll as your paddling Clearwater if you take the second portage. There are trout in there. I have done well on Caribou for Bass and Northern. Nice size bass too. Knock on my door if you want to chat more about it. Pete
Without the bad times, the good times wouldn't seem so good.

Hey Pete-
According to our fearless leader we only have 1 50-ish rod portage so I am bringing my tank of a canoe up there. If it's bigger water i'd like to have some stability over a lightweight canoe. I haven't bought a map yet but might do that on my lunch break today. It's a different group I am going with this time and they are aiming for the lake trout.
I'll come a knocking sometime this week or next bud.

Mid May on Mountain lake in 2009 was some of the best lake trout fishing I've ever encountered. Not a lot of big guys but way more then we could eat. Was very cold though...
Clearwater lake on the way in is gorgeous!
Keep in mind there will most likely be anglers on the Canadian side using engines.
Small meps inline spinner tipped with a leech (and split shot weight if necessary) proved to be deadly.

Scooby Doo can doo-doo, but Jimmy Carter is smarter....

All right, I can't find my maps.My wife puts stuff "away" sometimes. But I pulled up a voyageur map from their site. I guess it's only 90 from Clearwater to Mountain. Not too bad. Have you seen Johnson Falls yet? Nice day trip if you want to take the time. Don't get caught going to Canada.

yeah, I don't know what he is smoking but I only see a 90 also. I used my old town last year on EP 37 with a LOT of portaging. It wasn't fun, but if we only have the 1 90 rod portage that's not so bad. I'm also in much better shape this year.

I agree, a lot of eater sized lake trout in Mountain.
If you have time....Make a point to hike the Border Route trail to a couple of fantastic overlooks of Mountain lake. That trail runs in an east/west direction at the top of the Clearwater ~ Mountain portage. (should be easily recognizable) There is an overlook in each direction. The one to the east is closer, but, the one to the west is more expansive.
IMHO the 2nd & 3rd campsites east of the Clearwater portage are the only ones that I would consider above average.

If you were only going to hike to one of these 2 overlooks... Which one would you choose?
