SATURDAY AUGUST 24: Fun and FREE activity for anyone interested in hiking and learning more about the Border Route Trail, Kekekabic Trail and the Superior Hiking Trail.

The BORDER ROUTE TRAIL ASSOCIATION is offering two guided hikes on two beautiful sections of the Border Route Hiking Trail Saturday August 24.
Meet at the Gunflint Conference Center, 143 South Gunflint Lake, at 8:30am. Bring a pack with water, rain gear, camera and a berry bucket (just in case!). Wear sturdy hiking boots.

9:00 - Shuttle to Magnetic trailhead, hike the Magnetic Rock hiking trail/BRT to the Big Pines Trail and back to the Conference Center. Approx. 7 miles.

The second hike will gather at 1:00pm at the Gunflint Conference Center and depart at
1:30 - Shuttle to Loon Lake Landing, hike the Brice Breon trail to the South Rim trail & West End sections of the BRT, and the Middle Cliffs trail back to the Conference Center. Approx. 6.5 miles.
Many scenic overlooks along this section, old cedar forest, raspberries….

Bring a sack lunch or enjoy a hearty meal at the Red Paddle Bistro at Gunflint Lodge.

7:30 – Border Route Trail Association presentation at the conference center. Ed and John will talk about the relationship between the Kekekabic hiking trail, the Border Route Trail, and the Superior Hiking Trail. There are four hundred plus miles of continuous trail make up what is considered by the National Park Service as a de facto portion of the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT). When completed, the NCT will stretch 4600 miles from the Louis and Clark Trail at the Missouri River in North Dakota through to the Appalachian Trail in Vermont.

Once the North Country Trail/Arrowhead re-Route Bill is eventually passed by Congress, and as the individual sections of trail are certified as meeting NCT standards they will become an official part of the NCT. It is a pleasure to note that the Kek/BRT/SHT portion is regarded by those that have hiked our trails to be the most scenic part of the NCT. For those seeking further information on the Kek, SHT, and the NCT, contact details will be provided at the evening presentation, Saturday August 24 at the Gunflint Conference Center, 7:30pm.

Folks are invited to participate in the hikes of their choice or come for the whole day and hang out up the Gunflint Trail.
