I'd like to do my first hike camp trip. I've hiked before but always on a canoe trip. Looking for something doable in two days, with a day to lake trout fish in the middle. Obviously looking for a site with access to a lake trout lake. Would prefer a non motor lake, so not snowbank. Any suggestions?

How about brooke trout?

Take the Border Route trail to Gogebic Lake, next to Clearwater Lake. It is stocked with brooke trout. The trail from either direction is clearly marked, but just like any entry point, you will need a permit.

Summer or winter?
If summer, how do you lake trout fish without a boat?

I don't know how to fish for brook trout from shore. For lake trout I go spring or early summer. This trip would be spring. Find a piece of land where the water drops off decently and cast out a Cisco rig. Sit and wait. You'll have you're lake trout dinner shortly :)

Clearwater Lake, which the Border Route Trail goes by, is a lake trout lake. And there are two campsites accessible on Clearwater from the route.

Well I guess that makes sense...
Also don't brook trout live in well...brooks?
Or better known as small streams and creeks around these parts.

Sure. Give them fresh water and they love it.
Gogebic Lake in the BWCA is stocked: MN DNR Lakefinder: Lake Gogebic

I recommend Clearwater. Try to get the far eastern campsite. It has a good edge into the water that you could try your Cisco rig on.
