Almost set on taking a trip to Wind lake early June. I've searched a good amount looking for info but cant seem to find much in the way of fishing reports or trip reports. So was just wondering if any1 had any advice on fishing it and or campsites.
Info about our group, This will be trip #3,it will be a Thurs-Sun, we will be just base camping and fishing Wind if any day trip is made it would be to Washte, We mostly fish Smallmouth/Pike casting Raps/spoon/plastics but we do bring Leeches to cast out slips while in camp. We will be putting in on Moose lake(we always go through CBO). Thank you for any help you can give!

Tim Tebow is so electrifying to watch. He combines the fiery leadership of Ray Lewis and the throwing ability of Ray Lewis. -Jim Brockmire

We went to Wind Lake last year around July 14th. It was an awesome trip. We caught 97 fish, half were bass, 1/4 walleye and 1/4 northerns. We fished from 10-noon each day for three days and a little in the evening on the third day. We used primarily leeches, but were also able to catch some walleye casting with raps. The best place we found was on the north side of the island where there is a steep drop off. We had planned on doing a day trip to Washte but because the fishing was so good we did not feel like portaging to a different lake. As for campsites, the best one is on the island, we were on the one north of the island and it was really buggy. The campsite was not too big of a deal as we spent the whole day away fishing or hanging out on the islands in the middle of the lake. All the campsites on the north side of the lake seemed really buggy when we checked them. Our group was one adult, 2 16 year olds, a 10 year old and and 8 year old.

I am not sure how your trip days Thurs-Sun coincide with the BSA Northern Tier trips, but you might get queued up at the Moose Lake to Wind Lake portage. My son and I were returning to Moose Lake and got queued up for about a 1 1/2 hours on the Wind Lake side of the portage. At the high point there were 9 canoes at the portage. They seemed to just keep coming. There was a light rain, it was cold out, we had already packed up our fishing gear, and just sat in the canoe a 1/4 mile from the portage. I finally pushed in on the portage and we just worked our way through the crowd. The portage was a mess with Boy Scouts. They were slipping and sliding all over the place. They were all polite and moved to the side etc. It is by far the most crowded experience I have ever had at a portage. My son is about to become an Eagle Scout, so I am not dissing them. It is just something you might want to avoid. Since you will be base camping on Wind, you can probably be a little more selective on when you hit the portage, and keep your fishing gear out.

Assuming BSA opens the base this year, the high season for BSA trips is from mid-June to mid-August. Scouts usually leave base around 9:00. If you get there earlier you should be okay. They are allowed to return to the base at 1:00 so there could be another jam going the other direction at that time.
