So, a lot of what I read about under-quilts has to do with spring winter fall as considerations. I don't have a lot of testing opportunities before "the big trip".

Where and when I am going, record high was 90, record low 39. Averages are mid 50's low, mid 70's high. I was unhappy with my pad pretty quick. I want to be light, cheap and simple. I am going to convert a sleeping bag into an under-quilt. Admittedly, the reason I bailed on this old bag was from spending some cold nights in it. I am also rigging my tarp that came with my hammock to go under as a wind block. Should that be sufficient? Too much?

Often camping in summer i sleep on top of my bag, or only partially covered. I will have, but do not intend to use unless needed, long johns, hat, a cheap emergency blanket, and of course I can zip up my sleeping bag as intended instead of just a top cover now.

If you have a sleeping bag used as a uq and a bag to throw over you should be good for summer camping.

you should be good to go, the windproof idea will really help, on my may solo in the bwca, the windproof cover i bought from 2qzq worked superbly to block wind.
