Anyone ever heard of dogs getting ill from eating horse flies? The doggy I brought in over the fourth was snapping at them and seemed to
be getting them from time to time. After a day or so she became very lethargic and pretty much just stayed in her kennel the rest of the trip. One of the guys at work said it was from her bug eating. Is it true?

I haven't heard of anything like this. My dog bites at flies and other bugs all the time. Has your dogs health improved?

That would be a new one for me as well. My dog is a pointer and he'll point and stalk flies as they land on the deck and in the yard. He'll also snap at them as they fly by. He's gotten more than his fair share and never shown any ill effects.

He also does this with bees and wasps. Thats where the problem comes in. He has since learned to leave them alone but he has gotten stung on him mouth a few times. The first time he was real lethargic and his lip swelled up pretty big. But he also ate several hibiscus flowers off a plant which is where he got stung. The combination of both had him out of sorts for awhile but he was back to normal after a few hours and a trip to the vet to get checked out.

How long has the dog been lethargic? Is he still that way?

I don't really know for sure but I'd bet the guy at work is just talk. It could be something as simple as she was just tired from the trip, its a lot of physical work that some dogs aren't use to. Dogs get sore and fatigued just like we do if they are a little out of shape. It could also be something more serious.

If the dog is still showing symptoms or just not acting normal its time to get her to the vet to get a professional opinion.

She was better on the way out the next day but still a little subdued. After relaxing a few hours at the cabin she was coaxing me to take her for a walk. So, all is well. I still wonder tho.

I doubt it was the flies. Could be a thousand other things. If she does not improve completely, you should talk to your vet. There's Lyme and many other maladies that are more serious.
